Poetry in the Margins

Poems use to appear in the empty
space to the right, left or in the center
of the text we were reading,
but they were usually unconnected
to the words surrounding them.
They seemed to say more about the
paste-up artist’s sense of shape
and her juggling of the empty space
than why they were there at all. They
were more like festoons, garlands
and illuminations on a medieval scale
that were beautiful in their own right.
And it is this shape of emptiness
that hasn’t made the transition to
the new media, the one thing that
today’s app makers are unable
to grasp or understand.

I fear that when poetry disappears from the margins of digital editions, it ill disappear altogether.
