There is a station near sleep

There is a station near sleep
that only the old know.
The downcast fan on the dresser
slowly turns its face “no,”
the window I can walk through
is open to six-story air
and I lie on the bed at four
in the afternoon and climb down
the evolutionary tree to the
mind of the great apes,
to the mind of large mammals,
lower and lower until I come
to the brain stem mind of a fish
floating in his aquarium.
The draft on my feet I take for
someone changing the water I
breathe but the whole world
seems a thin flat membrane
I cannot swim through.
I dream of an empty, open field
running downhill. My fish-brain
cannot explain such a falling away,
but there’s no need to for in
this station without people there’s
an evenness and God-made serenity.

Unconsciously here, I think I was writing about meditating as the Buddhist do.
