Without A Smile

With yellow hair wrapped up in a blue
towel like a turban, she stands before
her mirror in the morning’s golden light.
It’s not a squat Hindi turban, though,
but one of a Medieval maid with
the raked-back peak of a jumbo jet fin.
From the waist down, she is a perfect
Mannequin wearing red and black
checkered pants, but from the waist
to turban she is naked.
With her bra backwards, she brings
the straps below her beasts as if
they were the arms of a small child
and with her chin down, fastens
hooks to eyes. She spins cups and
straps to the front and raises the crisp
whiteness across her chest.  Over her
shoulder she sees me watching her
in the mirror.  Our eyes meet.  She cocks
her head and without a smile says,
“What?”
