Glorious

Deng Xiaoping said it was glorious to be rich
and turned on the Chinese economic machine,
but to be a poor poet is glorious too.

A Saudi king used to throw hundred-dollar
bills into the Mediterranean to see how many
Greek swells at the restaurant would dive
after them, but poets can’t swim and their
wives who could, have long since deserted them.

Donald Trump is rich, but friends of mine
post pictures on Face Book of the redolent
NH autumn that I remember as a boy and
I know that money is no requisite to be a poet
which is glorious, too.
