Brookline, NH

In early August around ten pm
the window fan in the living room
of our five-room ranch pushes
the worries of the day out over
the deck, out over the half-acre yard,
south toward the Nisssitissit River
and the unassuming border with
Massachusetts.
Whispering its magic it pulls
the cool layered air of the tall pine
forest that runs heavy with the scent
of the New Hampshire woods into
our north bedrooms until, as we
fall asleep, the whole house
cools and seems to respire.

The weather here now is much like the weather in August in New Hampshire.  We sleep at night with the windows open and a fan running.
