Here In Thailand

Standing on his spindly red-wire legs
in a half inch of urn water, the white plaster
stork with its red golf-tee-like beak seems
on the verge of launching himself into
remembered flight with its wings back
like a swimmer about to answer the starter’s
gun.

Yet, he has a chunk missing from his neck
and he looks garroted and about to lose
his head altogether. You’d think the rural
Thais don’t recognize junk, but the truth
is there are no landfills so junk lives on
here in slow transition like the orchids
in their rotting coconut shells and an old
man sipping beer alone in a weary bower
so beautiful that even words fail.
