In Winter Scenes Like This
I miss the silence
in winter scenes like this
especially on starry nights
when chimney smoke rose
in vertical chalky lines and
the silence seemed profound.
I miss the sounds, too,
in winter scenes like this
which carried during the day
from streets miles away and
were made by friends you
almost thought you knew.
I miss being young
in winter scenes like this
when in the snow and cold
the whole world was playing
dead, but I was feeling
stronger everyday.
