An Image of Passing Clouds Upon the Land

The perfect rectangle of rice paddy
comes up to the road and opens out to
other paddies as far as the eye can see.
To either side are banana jungles or
cement walls that hide the humble
homes of generations of Thai families:
newborns, children, mothers, grandmothers,
grandfathers and occasionally a grown man.
Meticulously leveled, seeded, tamped
down the paddy looks like a stretched
canvas, a developing Polaroid with swirls
of sparse green on brown, as if the new rice
was an image of passing clouds upon the land.
